Ending Probationary Employment Without Termination Notice

January 22nd, 2009

A Supreme Court (of the Philippines) jurisprudence suggest this.

For years, employers are on their toes to ensure that the sixth month of employment of probationary employees are monitored to ensure no unqualified proby employees will be regularized. Likewise, proper documentation is considered a must for the following:

  1. Discussion of employment standards/expectation levelling
  2. Job description
  3. Performance appraisal
  4. Employment contracts and
  5. Observance of twin notice rule

This is to ensure the decision to end an employee’s probationary contract will not be construed as whimsical.

But a Supreme Court  jurisprudence about a case of a supervisor who failed to qualify as a permanent employee   is rather interesting.

On the 6th month, the Supervisor was not allowed to time in and as a result, he sued the company for illegally dismissing him.  But the court says there is no termination or dismissal but rather an expiration of his 6 month probationary contract.

Up Up and (Hope Not) Away

May 18th, 2008

Am talking about the prices of gasoline and lpg, power cost and food prices. Thanks to the oil cartel and fuel hungry developed nations.

An Ethanol Unleaded gasoline (the one I use) now cost US $1.25 (Php 49-50.00) per liter. My elecric bill went up from $75 (Php 3000.00) to $125 (Php 5000.00), courtesy of the power rates increase as well as increase usage of air-con due to the summer heat. These costs, on accounting point of view, are controllable expenses, so wifey and myself have made some cost saving measures.

With these, as the gov’t worries about the inflation and laborers demand for higher wages, corporations on the other hand, do their management accounting study to understand it’s operating expenses, including manpower cost.

Performance Management

April 22nd, 2008

As a result of our cerebral activity last week, I volunteered to be part of a group who will review the performance management system of the company where I’m presently engaged.

I believe in a competitive environment, every enterprise has to evolve and adopt to present determinants to ensure it’s corporate goals are achieved, and operate to earn. There’s a lot to fight for out there, thus, a company must remain attractive. In my opinion, there are at least two crucial elements that a company must keep, otherwise it will affect it’s profitability. Customer Loyalty and Employee Loyalty.

Both customers and employees share common factors why they chose to be loyal. (1) The company brand (image or reputation) and (2) Value for money. On customers view, the value they get from the price they pay, and on employees perspective, the value they get (terms and conditions of employment) from the service they render.

Adrenalin Rush

January 17th, 2008

Last night, I joined the gig of my staff at Star City as an activity to bade goodbye to the one who is bound for Singapore.

I was dared to join them in the viking(?) ride, though hesitant, I accommodated their request. At first, I thought the ride is just a simple but super sized see-saw. But when it went on full throttle, I find out this see-saw is not for me!

My heart pumps more blood and my lungs gasp for air, I thought this machine can kill. I survived the onslaught and managed to keep my composure. This experience is one of the longest 5 or 10 minutes of my life. I sat for a while and tried to look for food. Having found nothing that will satisfy my hunger, I joined my staff for another ride, this time in a bump car. Then I went home.
