What’s Wrong With The News?

February 28th, 2009

Philippines Markets

Every time I listen or read the news form the mainstream media, specially on the aspect of the economy, it’s as if doomsday is at hand. I’m certain the folks behind mainstream media exert considerable effort to balance their story, but the impression it creates, at least on me, is still negative.

Last Wednesday, a colleague and myself attended a gathering of entrepreneurs and top executives to learn the best business practices during hard times. Part of the discussion is the Philippine economic outlook for 09. While it is true that we are affected, and corruption is rampant, it is not that bad after all. We are better off than our neighbors and the Philippine economy is still expected to grow together with China and India. If my understanding is correct, our economy is not dependent on exports, like Hong Kong and Singapore, and we consume 60-70% of our produce. Add to these, are the remittances from OFW’s.

A Creative Social Accountability

October 19th, 2008

Maybe this was being done before, am not sure, but the whole idea is amazing. It’s not only creative, it’s entrepreneurial with a touch of social accountability. Last week, I received an invitation to witness the launch of a different artwork at the Global City, and I have to admit, I find the whole idea amazing. Maybe I’m the boring type of person that’s why am elated at the slightest appearance of creativity, LOL.

What am I talking about?

It’s the association of Billboard owners + Filipino artists = Art show along EDSA and other major thoroughfares. The arworks (photos; paints) will be displayed at the Billboards. I wish I could show a thumbnail of the artworks but the file is too big and have  copyright restrictions. Anyway, you can view the slideshow HERE

I mentioned social accountability right?

Happy To Be Pinoy

May 25th, 2008

I was doing my usual Entrecard hopping when I bumped into two blogs that made me feel good as Filipino.

The first was an entry at Read My Mind blog where I came to know that the Philippines’ San Miguel Beer is the best in Asia, beating the best beer brands of Singapore, China, Thailand, Indonesia and Japan.

Afterwhich, an entry (presumably of a Singaporean) at Ten Forty blog wherein the Philippines was given thumbs up as shopping haven compared to the Great Sale of Singapore. The noted pluses were (1) Filipinos were conversant in English, (2) the Philippines is home to the 3rd (Mall of Asia), 7th (Megamall) and 11th (SM CIty Cebu) largest mall in the world, (4) Sale or not sale, price is affordable and (5) Filipinos are great in customer service. The only downside, according to the blogger, is the seemingly lack of urgency or slow payment process.
