A brand is regarded as the reputation of a company. Presently, the quality of a product (or service) defines a brand. Soon, however, standards will be re-defined and initiatives on corporate social responsibility will also be given regard aside from the product.
Human Resource executives together with the CEO must lead the organization in observing social accountability. At the minimum, the welfare of the employees, consumers and the environment must be considered when establishing strategies.

A nugget of hope is what I unearthed for reading a newspaper after a cardio exercise. In the middle of political hula boos and increasing fuel prices, it was noted that some companies in the Philippines, in their own small way, is helping to protect the environment. These companies are:
- Lafarge Philippines
- HSBC
- SM Investments
- Ayala Land

This news will add value to our race, a timely break from the political circus we are facing. Time Magazine featured a Filipino environmentalist, Sir Von Hernandez, for his advocacy in the Philippines and South East Asia.
Von Hernandez is a former literature professor from the Philippines. With no one else seems to be concerned, he took it upon himself to create a noise to protect his environment.
In 1999 his relentless campaigning succeeded in making the Philippines the first nation in the world to ban waste incineration. Von has since advanced his advocacy to other parts of the region.
