Is politics in the Philippines already on the next level?
In terms of cerebral calisthenics, not quiet yet, because of the mudslinging and carnival like approach of campaigning. There were some improvements, I would say. It is interesting to note thought how some politicians are using blogs and social networking sites in their campaign.
Google/Facebook Ads, Blogger meet-ups, Facebook Fan Page, Dedicated blogs of and for the candidates, an army of blog commenters and twitterers, are new means of campaigning.
I wrote a commentary at blogwatch.ph about this, you may read it HERE
Blog Watch was conceived from lessons learned in 2004 elections through PCIJ traning of 3 bloggers, where focus of traditional media was on celebrity, scandals, election violence, mudslinging & scandals- exchange of accusations between parties and politicians becomes “entertainment”, campaign becomes talent show, candidates being contestants etc
Blog Watch is hosted by Vibal Foundation’s Philippine Online Chronicles and will be launched on November 24, 2009, from 11 am to 2 pm at the Max’s Restaurant in Bel-Air, Makati City
Blog Watch intends to cover underplayed stories in various formats (podcast, video, articles, commentaries) that will complement traditional media, such as stories that promote voters’ education and automated elections, campaign fund sources and expenditures, background of candidates, personal background, political background. This will be different from the past 2004 election where focus was on celebrities, scandals, election violence, mudslinging, exchange of accusations between parties, and where politicians have become “entertainers”, campaigns have become talent show, and even candidates have come in the form of “contestants”.
The death of former President Cory Aquino and the tribute the traditional media is attributing her brought back memories of EDSA 1986. As a 17 year old idealistic young man, 1st year college and unhappy with the social injustices around me, and not qualified yet to vote in a national election, I was one of the warm bodies who supported the uprising against the alleged dictatorship.
Tita Cory speaking before the joint US Congress (1/3)
Who is Tita Cory from my perspective as an ordinary citizen who supported her and went thru her presidency?
A new social networking site made for Filipinos in every part of the world was launched recently. Introducing… My SandBox!
What is My Sandbox?
My Sandbox, a brain child of SMART Comm., is another social networking site like facebook, multiply and friendster. Unlike the other social networking site, My Sandbox is also an online content store where you can buy music and games. Apart from this, it promotes mobile blogging where sharing of photos and videos are made easier. Of course, access to mobile blogging is via the SMART platform. But purchase of online content is made easier because you can charge it either to your pre paid or post paid subscription with SMART.
