The Web Safety Campaign In PH

November 20, 2010 · by Sonnie · Advocacy, web safety

On June 2010, as an offshoot to my training module on “Protect Your Brand: Use Social Web Responsibly”. I thought, if adults are affected by their irresponsible or ignorant use of the web, how much more are kids? So the idea to educate parents about cyber safety was born. Thus, Web Safety  Philippines was born.

The original concept is to educate parents to protect their pre teens safe online, but in the course of our seminars, we saw the importance to also educate the youth to protect their future opportunities, and yuppies and professionals to protect their brand.

To date, while we organize seminars, we got invited also to  school and Christian communities to conduct the “Watcha Webtrap! Keep yourself and  family safe online” learning session. We also guested in tv and radio shows to present the need and bring awareness. We got the attention of the  traditional media too.

Below are the cyber safety seminars we have conducted and the recognitions we received as of this posting, dated 11/20/10.

11/14/10 10th RUN Watcha Webtrap! @ MMBC Cubao

Despite the Pacquiao-Margarito fight, young people and their parents came to the seminar. This is the 1st time I flip one keynote presentation to another, to make sure both needs of kids and parents are met. I am honored to meet such a committed people who chose to be on the seminar than watch the Pacquiao fight.

11/13/10 9th RUN Watcha Webtrap! Youth Edition

We have young people and young at heart in attendance, an avid reader of Annalyn Jusay’s Blog-O-Rama came to the seminar all the way from Sta. Rosa Laguna with a copy of the Nov. 8 article in his hands.

10/30/10: 7th & 8th RUN: Watcha Webtrap! @ Waltermart Makati

Some attendees of  the  seminar last Oct 23 attended again, bringing more friends with them. The satisfaction you get from the appreciation of people  is an affirmation to continue the advocacy.

9.26.10 6th RUN: Watchout Webtrap! @ CCF Auditorium, St. Francis Square

We did have a good time at Christ Commission Fellowship [CCF] as they hosted and sponsored the 6th edition of Watchout Webtrap! Keep your family safe online, close to 1000 pax have attended, majority are youth but parents and couples attended too!

9/14/10 : 5th RUN: Watcha Webtrap! @ WWCF Makati [part 2]

Another great learning time for both facilitors, parents and young professionals

9/1/10 : 4th RUN: Watcha Webtrap! @ WWCF Makati [part 1]

The 4th run of the Keep your family safe online took place at Word for the world, Valero St., Makati City with couples and young professionals in attendance. We also delved on the topic of online branding and social media marketing because this was also asked during the Q and A. I will discuss more about this on the next meeting on Sept 14, 2010,  same venue. See you there!

8/30/10 3rd RUN: Watcha Webtrap! @ SPECS and PACS Seminar

Who said cyber safety should be the concern only of families belonging to the middle class? About 100 participants, a handful of parents and majority are kids being ministered to by SPECS foundation attended the 3rd run of the Keep your family safe online  seminar. To our surprise, these kids are as social media literate as any other kids, the only difference is they access the web in internet cafe’s, which makes it a little more challenging for parents to monitor their online activities.

8/15/10: 2nd RUN: Watcha Webtrap! @ Victory Greenhills

New volunteers joined the old ones as they take time out from their busy schedule to add value to the seminar. We have professionals,  members of the academe, mainstream and new media and micro entrepreneurs in attendance. Though the seminar is intended for parents of pre teens, we also have students and young professionals in the house.

July 11, 2010: Maiden RUN: Watcha Webtrap! @ Microsoft

Cyber Safety campaign for kids in the Philippines had it’s 1st milestone on July 10, 2010 at 6750 Ayala Ave, Microsoft Auditorium.
