Before You Attend A Blogger Event

July 12th, 2009 · by Sonnie · Blogging

One of the perks of being a blogger is we get to be invited into different events. Slowly, bloggers are being referred to as new media or online media and are being utilized for online/digital marketing. Our blogs and posts in social media sites serve as the press releases and ad of the sponsors.

When attending such events, what are some ethical considerations that as bloggers, we have to observe.

  1. Get permission when bringing a companion– Aside from budgetary constraints, the sponsor may be targeting a specific group, thus, you need to ask if it is ok to bring another blogger.
  2. Be courteous to return the investment cost– You were invited for a reason. When invited, ask for the objective(s) of the event. Check  if it will suite your blog objectives. Sponsors expect you to at least write about the event or product and give them back links if applicable. Don’t go to an event if you are not willing to write about the sponsor. Advise the sponsor that you will only write your honest thoughts and not an endorsement.
  3. If you are helping co-organize an event, don’t forget to disclose your participation. What’s in it for you? Or at least tell fellow bloggers why you are co-organizing the event.

Blogger events are so common nowadays, you may not be able to attend all. Choose which one you think is aligned with your blogging objectives and personal values. There are those who are interested on high profile events. Participation to these events with exposure on tri media are thought to add credibility to a blogger, but in some instances, it can also backfire. Some chose to participate on events that are political in nature while other’s on food and still others on wellness.

Enjoy the perks as a blogger but also protect your credibility  at all times.

  1. I really miss attending blogging events, and I hope I can find time to attend another one. Anyway, I want to include another tip if I may. One should be ready to socialize to everyone. I must admit, I was star stuck during my first time, and I wish I had more guts to talk to everyone.

I may not be online regularly, but I am consistently reading your posts.

    Keep it up!

  3. Another angle to consider is that since there is big interest in new media as bloggers we can offer to share our expertise and knowledge at non-blogging events. It’s possible we can add value to the event over and above simply blogging about it.

  4. this post is just in time. there are quite a number of blogging events to be held soon and ethics is very important indeed so as bloggers could get the highest esteem of organizers, sponsors and fellow bloggers.

  5. I agree with what you have written. As from what I have learned in the recent iBlog summit, how we act offline affects our online reputation. The blogosphere is a social community after all.

  7. Wow I never actually thought of it this way. Now that you mention it, there should be some etiquette guidelines for attending blogging events. So far in my city though, our blogging events are still a bit informal OR far between
