A H1N1 Virus

May 14, 2009 · by Sonnie · Ask Sonnie, Medical Science

CNN carried this banner story last week : WHO raises pandemic alert to second highest level.

The Swine H1N1 virus  is affecting hundreds of people around the world, creating fear among citizens and govt.  scrambling to cope with the disease which originated in Mexico. As of this writing, more countries in Europe  and the West are affected by the virus. No reported incidents yet in the Philippines. But what puzzled authorities is the way the virus is spreading in progressive countries where   young and healthy citizens are getting infected, in contrast to the pandemics in the past.

Accordingly, this virus is a combination of 3 strains– swine influenza, avian influenza and human influenza. It was still unclear how the virus was transmitted to humans, but what is certain is the the virus had mutated and  humans don’t have natural defenses on this, yet.

Flu or influenza is not as simple as we thought it is. Normally, we think influenza is just a simple viral infection affecting mainly the upper respiratory system and  accompanied by fever.  However,  this infection can lead to complications specially those with recurring medical condition on lungs, kidneys and heart. If taken lightly, results can be fatal. And with the virus continually evolving, as what had happened now, pandemic seems to be inevitable since  transmission is via air.

Taking all forms of precautionary measure, therefore, to protect oneself from the virus is a prudent move.

A flu vaccine like vaxigrip, is one of the best defenses available to ensure we and our love ones are protected from “human influenza”. Sanofi Pasteur is actively empowering parents to take  the threat of influenza seriously thru it’s advocacy bakuna sa flu. With the crazy weather we have, a “rainy” summer season, more are prone to have viral infection. For a tropical country like ours, the best time to get a flu shot is now. Consult your doctor on how to go about this, and get more information about influenza at   http://www.bakuna.ph

  1. We all can’t be too cautious with all these new strains of the flu virus criss-crossing the globe between animals and humans.

It’s time world leaders take a more concerted effort to deal with this issue.

  2. Hi Jhay,

The world has become a small place to all of us, including the transmission of virus. I agree with you, world leaders should take a concerted action on these, including the sharing of resources and technology, not only for the a H1N1 virus, but for other illnesses as well.
