The Power Of Social Media In Politics

April 29, 2009 · by Sonnie · Ask Sonnie

With the coming election next year, politicians are also invading Social Networking Sites. They (or their handlers) are setting-up blogs, or opening an account in different SNS and Micro Blogging Sites. They’re  on Twitter and almost everywhere, ha ha. I was even asked by an acquaintance abroad to organize a bloggers get together for a politician running for Mayor.

Not too long ago, there was a buzz  that a  blogger allegedly sold a list of what was labeled as “influential bloggers” to a presidentiable. Turned out, according to another story, that the list was allegedly sold by a local PR agency who conducted a FG study about bloggers. Politicians will not only use the tri media for their PR and campaign, but will also test the power of new media.

Social Media is already a powerful political tool in   1st world countries. This news article from BBC is a testimony how young people are able to organize a huge rally just by using twitter. Filipinos have embraced Social Media like Facebook, Multiply, Twitter and Plurk. It remains to be seen how national politicians can use this to their advantage.
