Come To Papa

My son’s 11th birthday is just 2 weeks away, it seems like yesterday, we just observed his 1st birthday. For purposes of convenience, we held the party then in a kiddie restaurant so the birthday party favors and party supplies will not be a problem. As if the thought of having a party is not yet a good reason to celebrate, our son even made his first steps on his own giving us more reason to celebrate.

My son’s name is Elhav, meaning gift of God. It was taken from two hebrew words (1) El for God and (2) Hav for gift. He came to our life only after 5 years of marriage. Wifey has retroverted uterus, and though a lot of people said it’s difficult for her to conceive a child, nothing is hard to the God we believe. We prayed and kept on believing, and we were gifted not only of Elhav, but also a daughter and we named her Elgene. Her name meant God of beginnings (El for God, Gene a variant of the first book of the Bible, Genesis, which means beginning).

Elhav is now a pre teen, what I liked about him is his simplicity, appreciation of authority and situation. He is not demanding, if he wants to buy something, he asked if he can have it, if you say no he will not push the issue. There’s a time when he wanted a new PS2 game, he saved for it and later asked me to just accompany him.

I wonder what can we do for his 11th birthday? Would a party make him feel awkward?

I suppose it will not be hard to look for birthday party supplies for a pre-teen boy, besides all his playmates are just in the community. Another option is to have a family out of town trip since it’s still summer in the Philippines and school is still a month away. Ahhh, I guess it’s better to ask him. Kid’s grew fast and as a father I have the tendency to still look at him as my baby boy and make decisions for him.

Anyway son, if you happen to read this post, I want you to know that I LOVE YOU very much, your mom and sister too. Be who you are and pursue your passion. But always remember your parameters. Consider the saying of king Solomon “Remember your creator while you are young, think about him before your times of trouble come. The years will come when you will say ‘I dont find any pleasure in them‘ (Ecclesiastes 12:1).

Just a suggestion, why not throw a party for the less privileged kids. He and his friends will be the hosts (and emcee), and they would invite the guests (maybe the sons and daughters of neighboring yayas, drivers, and other house helps). It’s a great way to teach kids to help others and learn how lucky they are. This is what we did for a Christmas party last year, soooo totally worth it!
