Labor Day Gig?
A few more days and the world will be celebrating labor day on May 1.
In our part of the world, May 1 is greeted by rallies requesting for increase in wage and non wage benefits. Most often, these rallies are also political in nature and bias against the gov’t. Usually, May 1 is also the day when gov’t. announces it’s token appreciation to laborers.
In the Philippines, our labor code, according to some, is outdated and not aligned to the present realities of globalization and open economy. It blindly favored the workers. Labor cost in the Philippines is said to be one of the highest in the region, which resulted to a few manufacturing firms relocating to China and other Asian countries. Some employer organization gripe at the fact that every year, on top of the CBA between organized workers and employers, there are also regional wage boards that recommends mandatory increase of daily wage. However, Filipino workers and the Philippines remain to be attractive because of his craftsmanship and technical skills, proficiency in English and TLC. Investments on call centers, medical transcription centers and BPO’s continue to increase.
Anyway, what we will be busy about on May 1 is our participation to various jobs fair. At the moment, we are in coordination with the organizers to determine what trade show booths are provided and if it include pipe and drape backdrop and table skirts. Likewise, to ensure that our collaterals will have banner stands, because not all event sponsors allocate these to participants.
Unfortunately, May 1 holiday will not be a gig time for my group.
