Pacquiao Won Over Marquez Unconvincingly

Watching the unfinished business, live in the big screen of SM Cinema is more exciting because you can see the shots, the connections and feel the energy from people and the fighters themselves. I think it was a great fight, Juan Manuel Marquez kissed the deck on the 3rd round but managed to hurt and dominate Manny. But congratulations to Manny Pacquiao for making history, by winning via split decision, he became the first Filipino and Asian to become champion in three weight divisions.

Manny Pacquiao still has the power and the heart, but it seems the speed got lost somewhere and team Pacquiao was unprepared for the Dinamita’s new arsenal. Marquez did his assignment and studied the moves of PacMan. The Dinamita connected more shots, fought smart and almost finished Pacquiao on the 2nd and 8th round. But the judges saw it the other way around, maybe because Manny Pacquiao scored a knocked out, or perhaps he is more popular than Marquez, I dont know. If I will speculate, perhaps a Marquez victory is less lucrative compare to more prized fights ahead with a championship belt on the side of Manny Pacquiao. In my opinion, however, the best that Manny can salvage from the bout is draw.

Please don’t get me wrong, am happy with the victory of Manny, but I  saw a better fighter on Marquez Saturday night, or Sunday noon time in the Philippines. (It’s kinda hot now in Manila, thanks to the roller shades, it helped deflecting sunlight and heat inside my room as I type this entry).

What about you, do you think Marquez was robbed of glory?

Poor guy. Did his best but it didn’t quite cut it.

I totally agree with you. Today’s bout showed that Manny’s not as invincible as he’s projected to be. It was a good fight but it was far from the finesse of Dela Hoya-Mayweather. In my opinion, Marquez was the more intelligent and disciplined boxer. Congratulations to Manny Pacquiao.
    I hope there’s a PART 3. :)

Hmmm.. That’s right!!!! He was overconfident a bit that he didnt manage to innovate moves to counter punches with Marquez… It was not a victorious win for Pacquiao, however, he did his best.. BUT HE IS NOT PREPARED FOR THE FIGHT. Its obvious in the way he moves in the ring.. He cannot predict Marquez…

Juan Marquez.. is very smart. He knows what he is doing and he can actually predict some moves of Pacquiao. That’s one thing that Team Pacquiao should study.. hehehheh…

Basically, if your famous its not the only thing that make you a champion.. ITS THE SKILL, skills are very dynamic and relative to the boxers.. Maybe manny should focus more on these.. and innovate different styles and be sensitive to the moves of his opponent.

    See yah!

For me, I would like to watch the third encounter and see a convincing knockout from Pacquiao. Well, until then…:D

in my own scoring, i think marquez won narrowly. i think its 114-113 for marquez. i’m a filipino and i’m more in favor of pacquiao’s power and speed… but i was disappointed coz i didn’t see the speed i was expecting from pacman. what can i say? marquez is really a smart fighter. pacquiao should also add upper cut on his moves. coz i think he could have knocked out marquez on some moves if he had the upper cut arsenal. although i agree on manny moving to lightweight division, i think the only thing marquez have to do is move up to lightweight as well and try to seek for a rematch on that division w/ pacquiao, and prove himself better, CONVINCINGLY.
roach was right when he said, “Manny was better on training than on the fight itself!”
if i’m roach, i’d be disappointed as well despite the victory.

Boxing is one of the sports that requires a judge decision. I understand your reaction as everyone capable of judging may have other views than those who were there. Judging is basically giving an opinion - an expert opinion. How ever faulty the judges’ opinion are, there is nothing more we can do.

Marquez hit Manny with more blows, but Manny’s blows were heavier. Could have gone either way. Manny should see this as a wake-up call & eliminate all the distractions to his fight career.

My goodness…already with the anti Pac-Man sentiment. Pac was better than he was in the first fight by far. He has developed way past the left hand and a prayer style he once was known for. Did you watch the fight? He had Marquez hurt on more than 4 occasions and solidly floored his ass once. Marquez fought valiantly but lacked the pop in his punches to stop or dissuade Manny from continuing the barrages. For people to say “oh he was robbed” meaning Marquez is just ludicrous and shows a real lack of balls. I understand if you lost your old ladies egg money or something , but damn give pac the credit due..he came, he fought his ass off against a bad ass Mexican and he won…that plane, that simple. Don’t shame that fight by coming up with he got robbed BS. Grow up and just deal with it. I am a fan of both fighters and IMHO both are top notch and neither lost a damn thing..both were better..and JMM is still a champ in my eyes..don’t belittle his effort by saying he was robbed. That’s a punk ass way.

I think the judges are blind, Sonnie was almost right, but as for me, Pacquiao should have lost by unanimous decision, in scoring, there is no power punch, even if you knocked down an opponent, you can only lead by as much as 3 points that is 10-7, but still marquez had many clean shots that springs pacquiao’s head in all angles of the ring. Even though marquez punch is not as powerful as pacquiao’s , still the count difference in clean shots is very far… Roach should have told pacquiao in the last rounds that marquez is leading in scorecards, and the last chance is to knock him out. And also, the Filipino announcers stinks, they don’t judge immediately based on their opinion, unlike in other fights.

i think manny is a real great boxer, it’s just marquez is as great as he is. marquez proved his worth in this fight but he must be man enough to accept defeat. if i would scale-rate the fighters performance (1-10) pacquiao 9, marquez 8.

  11. March 19th, 2008 at 23:22 | #11

Am happy that manny won that fight, but am not really satisfied with the decision… but the judges have spoken… and they are the expert on that field…

Am hoping to see the part 3 of this installment…

it was close. Had Marquez won, it would be an unconvincing victory for him.

it was very obvious won the fight.marquez may have a number of clean shots but didnt have enough power to convince the judges while manny on the other hand had knocked him out in round 3 and had a lot of meaninful punches that impressed the judges.i personally think that it would be unreasonable if the judges gave it to marquez.the judges made a rational decision..sori marquez you were the loser in the fight..
