Looking Back

I took my family for dinner at Bonifacio High Street and goofed around for a while. We had a good bonding time together, and I also can’t help but recall my childhood days in the area. Who would have thought that the place where we use to enjoy nature and collect bullet slugs is now thriving with economic activity?

About 25 years ago, this sprawling area is once part of a military camp. It seem’s just yesterday when my playmates and I will walk from Guadalupe to Fort Bonifacio via the South Cembo route or Barangay Pinagkaisahan or Barangay Pitogo. We pass through roads made of earth, with lot’s of trees and vegetation.

Back then, we make our own toys, like kites made of old newspaper or papel de hapon (boka boka and sarangola), blowing bubbles (made of crushed gumamela leaves mixed with powder soap), toy cars made of evaporated milk cans and torn rubber slippers cut in circles to serve as tires.

We catch dragon flies, grasshoppers and beetles (salagubang and salaginto) to play with. We also collect different spider species so we can pit them against each other.
Why am I sharing this?
Nostalgia perhaps, but because we are so preoccupied with a lot of things, we may not recognize how far our nation have gone. Yes, there’s still a lot of work to do. Yes, our neighbors may have developed faster than us. And yes, we still have a handful of underprivileged communities in our country.
While we should recognize the need to work double time to be competitive and attract more investors, it’s also healthy to pause for a while, look around and thank God for the little blessings and development that we have had.
Aside:
As we enter in a season of growth, 7.3 % economic growth and the best in 31 years, the country can expect the “middle class” to expand. This could usher a season for buying real estate and a boost on the travel and tourism industry. We can expect more tourist arrivals as well as more Filipinos traveling abroad for a vacation.
The influx of tourist presents an opportunity to earn. If you are a property owner, you can lease or rent your property so would be travelers can look at what you have for a vacation home .
