A New Economic Order

View of Manila Bay (and SM by the Bay establishments), from Fitness First,
One e-Com Center, SM Mall Of Asia

A refreshing view while sweating it out inside Fitness First (Gym).

This place used to be a barren area, no activity except migratory birds and crawling animals. But today, the place is sprawling with economic activity with more construction expected. If my memory serves me right, in the pipeline are construction of 2 world class hotels and a large sports arena for football/rugby and other sports.

When I drive around metropolis, I noticed that construction is almost everywhere, aside from SM Central Business Park, more constructions are on-going in Makati, Ortigas Center, Fort Bonifacio. I remember vividly in one of the business presentations I attended, it was noted that families are spending more for dining, an indication that people have more cash and good business lies ahead.

Are we really in the middle of unprecedented growth in the Philippines? Sometimes, because of too much pessimism, we fail to notice the changes around us.

While the beneficiaries of this growth is being debated, we can nevertheless, prepare to what lies ahead and enjoy the benefits of this season of growth. Shy away from the traditional mindset and look for the global movement, the new needs brought about by the new global structure. With these, we can find opportunities and align our preparations and plans so we, too, can enjoy prosperity.

Instead of cursing the recent strength of Peso, we must accept this reality. Based on forecast the Peso will get stronger this year and may settle to 30-35 to $ 1. We should align our initiatives and plans with the present economic environment. For every problem, a need is arises. For every need, an opportunity is also presented. It is up to us to look for that need, think of how this can be addressed, prepare and equip ourselves (or our business) to meet this need and we’ll be a major player in the future economic activity.

As we change our paradigm, ask ourselves, do we still need to work abroad just to earn more? Do we need to work abroad just to earn dollars? Ask the bloggers around and you’ll know they are earning US $ right here in the Philippines, right in the comforts of their own home, and in their own time. Do we really need to work for someone or we can be an entrepreneur? Look around and consider the changes, prepare or you’ll be left behind and miss the opportunity.

Perhaps, God, in his grace and mercy, has ushered a new season. Politics will still be around, so is corruption. These are the things we can not change by ourselves. But we can start from our own circle of influence and be proactive. Pray so your goals are aligned with His plan for you.

Interesting thoughts Sonnie. Although the strength of the peso does hurt (many of my investments were in dollars), I do agree with you that it is a reality.

I believe that perhaps the change in the situation in our country now may be a signal to us to look reconsider the way we do things. Whether we react well or not will, as you say, determine if we will be left behind and miss the opportunity. Good insight.

Hi Kelvin,

I hope we can all adjust and make the most of the opportunity before a cycle of bust sets in.
