Will To Win At Mandalay
I just finished watching the rematch of Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao against Marco Antonio “Baby Face Assasin” Barerra live via sattelite at SM Cinema. As expected, Manny won the fight, unfortunately, it was not via knockout but unanimous decision.
I thought this was a boring and dirty fight courtesy of Barerra. Barerra’s battle plan is not to engage but to hit and run, thus, it became boring. And when Barerra is about to be knocked down, Barerra hit Pacquiao with a hook while the referee is trying to break them up. This cost Barerra a point deduction. He also suffered a bad cut under his right eye.
Herewith are lessons I thought can be applicable either to our work or life:
- Avoid the same mistake: To Barerra, it is already an honor to last 12 rounds of boxing and not get knocked down, unlike the other Mexicans. Therefore, his battle plan is not to engage but to hit and run. An intelligent plan.
- Learn your lesson: The first time Barerra met Pacquiao, he did not come well prepared. Thus, he was knocked down.
- Earn while you can: Though Barerra lost his crown against Marquez in their Rumble at Mandalay early this year, there was this unfinished rematch against Pacquiao. He capitalized on this and stand to earn $ 2M .
- Seek the help from above: Pacquiao, after realizing Barerra came well prepared and a tough nut, was observed to be doing the “sign of the cross” more often.
- Don’t play dirty: Pacquiao, when presented an opportunity to attack Barerra in his accidental slip, waited for his opponent to gain balance before attacking. Barerra, when the referee is breaking them up and Pacquiao’s defense are down, hit him that almost knock the lights out of Pacquiao. He did this on the 11th round when he was on the brink of being knocked down by Pacquiao.
- Don’t underestimate your opponent: It was believed that Pacquiao’s took his training lightly that’s why he had weight problem prior to their weight in.
Knocked out or not, Manny Pacquiao still won. I hope not only he, but the rest of us who witnessed the fight and followed his career will learn from this.
What other lessons do you think we can learn?

Here’s another lesson: You can’t please everyone all the time. Nanalo ka na at lahat, disappointed pa rin ang ibang tao dahil hindi by KO.
Not everybody has the same expectation from Manny. Some want him to win by KO; others, it is enough that he wins.
I guess there is more excitement in win by KO. Manny was not able to do that, so some felt “less thrill”, somewhat disappointed. To each one his own feeling.
@ Nathaniel–
perhaps winning by knockout signifies dominance or supremacy (over) the Mexicans.
@ Romy– agree
[…] most people expected. Fellow blogger Sonnie even thought it was boring, but he pointed out several lessons we could learn from the fight. I’m sure almost everyone expected a knockout or even a knockdown from Pacquiao or Barrera to […]
barerra played safe. he did it just for the sake of surviving the 12 rounds. para lang masabing natagalan niya ang laban niya with manny. lagi nalang siya atras ng atras at ever defense, hindi xa lumaban talga.
