Of Transformers and Parenting, Of Love Songs and Marriage Vows

I have to rewrite this entry, thanks to the intermittent Internet connection of Globe’s Speak and Surf, my post got lost.

‘Twas a busy week, meeting the demands of both work and social responsibility, I can’t even find an extra time to conclude my blog series on “how to lose your job”. This weekend though, is my time for the family.

Saturday morning, my son and I hit the theatres early to catch the first screening of Transformers at SM Mall of Asia. I noticed the presence of young dads, young couples than kids. Perhaps it’s because the Transformers (cartoons) became popular in our generation :-). Though my son enjoyed the movie, I enjoyed it more! We’re discussing about the possibility of a sequel since Starscream escaped and at least two “cube” created decepticon robots were unaccounted. Aside from effects that we enjoy, the movie is about friendship, sacrifice, commitment and bravery. Our fave character is “bumblebee”. We lavished a sumptuous lunch together afterwards, and had our haircut.

After I dropped my son home, it’s Mrs. Sonnie’s Porch turn for a date. We had our toenails cleaned and polished in a salon at SM Manila before heading to the concert of Steven Curtis Chapman at COP. We enjoyed the music– a combination of acoustic, rock and love songs. His love songs are different. It’s not about brokenhearted, separation or forbidden love, but of the unfailing love and commitment to the marriage vow. Before Chapman sang “I will be here”, he shared his amazement of the popularity of the song in the Philippines courtesy of Gary V. I was also teary eyed when he shared the circumstances why he wrote the song for his wife. His parents, at that time, married for 28 years, decided to call it quits and filed a divorce. The song is meant to assure his wife that he’ll be around no matter what. That love is the commitment to keep the marriage vows made in the presence of God, even when when the goosebumps effect of courtship is no longer present. What an inspiring love song! After the concert, we had a quick dinner at a Chinese fast food before heading home.

As a family tradition, we’ll celebrate Jesus in a worship service Sunday morning. but in the afternoon, it’s my daughter’s turn for a date. We intend to watch “Fantastic 4″ but because of her kuya’s influence, she may opt to watch Transformers too!

Occasionally, I date members of my family mano o mano just to connect and have a bonding moment. I find this helpful even though we have regular family gigs.
