Blogs That Build People
After reading my post on “Blogs for online mentoring“, a successful entrepreneur sent an encouraging email. Describing himself as “breathing for five decades”, he expressed serious intentions to mentor the younger generations and would like to explore the strength of blogs for this purpose.
An educator blogger also expressed his wish to have a common portal where would be mentors can connect with would be mentee, setting the pace for transfer of wisdom.
Likewise, an Indian reader volunteered his services if ever, this online mentoring thru blogs will materialize.
Nowadays, it’s not common for someone to get out of his/her way just to reach out and help others. Equally not common is the use of blogs in the Philippines to build people.
Though blogs are popular now in the Philippines, organizations both for profit or not, have not recognized it’s full potential yet. Admittedly the low Internet access rate in the Philippines is the culprit, but this picture will change soon. Almost all younger generations of Filipinos have a friendster or multiply account. The more geek ones go for wordpress or blogger.
The best way to connect with these dudes and dudettes are blogs.
At the moment, Filipino youths and young professionals blog for the following reasons:
- To earn (as an additional means of income or the main source)
- As marketing tool for their business
- Branding for the blogger (image or credibility)
- Income thru google Ads, reviews, other advertisements, etc.
- To connect with people with similar interests.
- To Share files, mp3s, videos, pictures, podcasts.
- To promote their Belief or Non Belief
- To simply have a depository of their thoughts and events in their lives.
Most blogs are personal in nature. while others creates a niche and still others build a community.
But what about blogs to mentor, have you seen one in the Philippines?
If it’s labor of love…
- Will it lessen ones worth if s/he will mentor for free?
- Can this project gain acceptance since others do it for a “fee”.
- Can society find value on this since it’s informal and free? People still measure the value they gain by how much they pay. Free is perceived to be cheap or worthless.
- Will there be takers? In a competitive environment, submission to another for mentorship is not a viable option. People strive to outdo others so they can reach the summit ahead and/or replace the incumbent.
- If, for instance, we are targeting the underprivileged, do they have the means to go online?
Is this a project worth the try? What do you think?

My 2 cents: Some schools block Friendster, Multiply and similar social network sites. A school South of Manila does the same but goes beyond that. It offers its students a functional equivalent. They call it !people.
I’m tempted to call it a Social Operating System.

would you please recommend someone who might want to have his or her blogs to appear in my education-related web site (www.guide2college.net)?

I think this is a great project! I tried making a “stuff I learned” blog about… well… stuff I learned (hehe. obviously) about web design, writing, languages, art, and music. But I eventually merged it with my personal blog and mixed “mentoring” there. But now you got me thinking about relaunching my other blog. ^^ I just hope I get more time to focus on it, though.
Anyway, great post! I’m sure a lot of people will be encouraged to spread the love. Or, in this case, spread the knowledge. Hehehe.
Hi Sarah,
The response to this post is heart warming, I’ve been receiving notes and emails expressing their support and participation. Hopefully, I can set this up soon.
Keep in touch
Good post. Sounds like the Filipino youths blog for the same reasons every else does

If you’re thinking what I am thinking, I would say it’s worth trying. I have had plans to put up a blog about my notes as an ECE student some couple of weeks ago for the start of the school year. I just haven’t started it yet as I still have notes so few to share, and I am still trying to learn MathML so I could incorporate the formulas with the explanations and/or techniques I’ve learned. I don’t actually intend it to be a “teaching” blog, it would instead be a “reviewer” blog for myself. I guess some other people would benefit from it, too, that I thought it really wasn’t a bad idea after all.
