Procedures, Procedures, On the Wall…
Am no fan of “procedures”, specially if it will complicate a rather simple situation.
If at one point, you attempted to return or exchange a defective product, or if an ATM did not dispense cash but the amount was deducted from your account, or you tried to secure a document from a govt. agency, or you filed a claim with your insurance provider—- then you know what I am talking about
But procedures exist for a purpose. And to relieve ourselves with unnecessary stress and frustration, set aside first the “customer is always right” mentality. Try to understand the logic behind so you can go with the flow and not lose your temper, and if need be, reason together not with the implementor, but with the decision maker.
Consider this:
Jesus and John are cousins, Jesus is the Christ, John is the prophet. John came baptizing at the Jordan river and declared openly that somebody greater than him will come (referring to Jesus).
Jesus came to be baptized by John, but John said “I need to be baptized by you, so why did you come to me” (Matt 3:14), but Jesus answered ” Let it be this way for now (huh?!), it is right for us to do this…” (Matt 3:15a).
What the…? Not logical, it seems, because it’s not normal in the corporate world or in the govt. to have the boss (Jesus) following a procedure (being baptized) and submitting himself to John (a subordinate). But nuggets of wisdom can be found in this story.
Why following the procedure is important, in this story?
God, prior to Jesus baptism, have told John the sign that will point to the Christ. That the Christ will be baptized by him, he will saw the Holy Spirit come down from heaven and remained in the Christ (John 1:29-34). These shall signal that he will now fade and the Christ will shine, and his work is about to end.
If John and Jesus did not follow the procedure, the Holy Spirit will not come down from heaven and dwell in Jesus, and John will not know that Jesus is the Christ. He may have assumed it is Jesus, but he would miss the sign and confirmation. Besides, John, when his life is about to end and in prison, doubted if Jesus is indeed the Christ (Matt 11:2-6).
Furthermore, immediately after the Holy Spirit came down to Jesus, He was led to the desert where he fast for 40 days. During this period, he was tempted by the opposer and became victorious. This event in Jesus life is important because after this, He began his work and John was imprisoned. Before he started with his mission, Jesus must have the credibility before the people. He would later require people to change their lives, but before he does this, he himself must be an overcomer. And the coming down of the Holy Spirit facilitated the 40 day fast and draw the opposer to tempt Jesus. Jesus, with the Holy Spirit succeeded and overcame the common weaknesses and failures of man, to wit:
- lust of the eye
- lust of the flesh
- lust for material things
Just imagine what would happen if set procedures were not followed in this story?
Now I understand why medical operations are also called “medical procedures”.
For every procedure or requirement we find in the Bible, there is a reason, dig and seek the wisdom behind. Let this be our reflection as we approach the lenten season.
For every procedure we have at work, in business or elsewhere, as I said earlier, understand the purpose and go with the flow. This will not only relieve you of the unnecessary stress but you can properly position yourself in case you need to reason out.
