Take It To The Chin
I was reading this blog entry of David Maister and kinda’ reflect how management of top corporations in the Philippines would handle issues like this?
David pointed how leadership can set an example, have the b**ls to “take it to the chin“– taking responsibility for the error and accepting the consequences.
To quote David:
The property management firm (let’s call them Acme) realized there was a mistake in the paperwork regarding a specific cleanup for the hospital. Basically, the paperwork said that waste was dumped in one particular site when it actually went to another. Both sites were the same type, but a clerical error had been made. No actual harm done because both sites accept the same type of waste—but in these situations paperwork is supposed to be exact.
This was Acme’s mistake, but it would be a costly one to rectify. The team involved knew that they could say nothing and no one would ever know and there would be no actual harm done.
They asked their CEO what to do, and he said: “We will meet with the hospital and take it on the chin. We’ll look like fools—it’s a silly error. The hospital has had a lot of bad press lately and the last thing they need is any kind of environmental error going to the press.”
Up until now, the relationship with the hospital had been a great one (representing a $0.5 million account) and admitting this mistake could become a real thorn in Acme’s side, making them look incompetent. They could lose the account and the word of mouth publicity that would follow would hurt future business in health care circles.
With my limited interaction with most Gen X, Y and Ragnarok employees, it appears that they would rather cover up for the mess and mistakes they created than getting embarrassed. In most cases, they only emulated the behavior of their superiors.
Would you agree that integrity is fast becoming an endangered animal? If so, how can we change a corporate culture that lacks integrity?

Take It To The Chin…

Would…
I work in a field where integrity often takes a backseat because of the bottomline $$$. I manage quality assurance and test software for a living. Often, I have to explain to upper management that Project X cannot be delivered on time because of serious issues that will be to the detriment of our client. It’s a moral dilemma to me when I get basically asked to bury “unfavourable data - i.e. serious bugs” that would delay delivery. In the end, this approach usually bites the company back in the ass — NO one ever remembers that a product was delivered on time, but PEOPLE DO REMEMBER that a product was a piece of crap, always.
I work for a Healthcare Service organization. Integrity in this field is the corner stone of the business. But. Medical professionals being (dirty!!) humans, many a time overlook this fact and try to create cocoons around themselves so that they are un-affected by their own lack of Integrity. Still, the world goes on! and these creatures (once revered) continue make hay while their sun shines!
I agree with you.I think integrity is all about an individual and the morals he/she holds. Two wrongs can not make a right no matter what.It is a challenge to us all that, much us we blame others for the mistakes they have made ; it is of noble course to live by that which we say or believe in.We should not compromise our values or character irrespective of the situation. It is better to face the situation and change for the best rather than lie or hide for TRUTH !Whether buried or hidden,it will still be know— someday and what an embarrassement!!

Maybe it’s not much of integrity but being responsible enough to face the music when you screw up is what’s lacking.
