Meet the E.K.’s

These are my kidz: Elhav Kristoff, my first born and Elgene Karsten, my youngest.

No, their names aren’t German but Hebrew, Elhav means gift of God. (El means God and Hav means gift). Though my wife has a retroverted uterus, God blessed the fruit of the womb. After 5 years, we saw our miracle (you may read our story of faith here). Elgene meant God of beginnings, El for God and Gene is a variant of Genesis, the first book of the Bible. She came to this world in the midst of a family crisis. Her name is a reminder that God, despite our stupid decisions in the past, can bring new beginnings.

Being part of a dynamic and prestigious firm, the temptation to bring work at home is high. But I see to it that I practice work-life balance and also spend quality time with family. My rest days are precious and would spend these with them. Time flies— they grew so fast, just yesterday, I cradle and put them to sleep in my chest. Now, I they are beginning to have their own world, thus, needs their own space and independence, slowly but surely.

I made it a goal to invest more time with them (now), so I have plenty of deposits to withdraw when they hit their teenage years. Raising kids and leading a family to have the “fear and respect for the Lord” is pretty tough in our times, we need all the graces of heaven to succeed. Husbands and fathers have no excuse before God for whatever will happen to the family.

They are also the reason why I will not leave the Philippines. I saw the effect of distant parenting to some. I would not want this to happen to my family. This is not to put any family down, leaving your family to work in a foreign land is a bitter pill to swallow. This is a sensitive social issue, only if the past and present gov’ts could have……

While making this blog entry, my daughter saw me. I kissed her and allowed her to read the entry and said “When you’re a little older, I want you and your kuya to go back and read this so you would know how precious you are to me and your mama”..

Thanks for the reminder to spend quality time with our children, no matter how busy we get. They should be the priority of our lives and our time. It would have been infinitely easier for us and our work to have our daughter taken care of her Lola in the Philippines while she was a baby, but we opted to keep her with us despite the difficulties. No regrets. :)

It’s hard to live though, what we preach. But work-life balance must be done, otherwise we might regret it when our kids are already grown up. It’s a scary thought to think they will leave you one day.
