Having Big Tummies

Gaining weight and having a big tummy is a result of a slowing metabolism, inactive lifestyle, and eating habits. Not necessarily a value adding change.
It may be normal and generally acceptable, specially as we get married or have kids or age. But an overweight person and having a big tummy may be a dangerous combination because it increases our risk for a heart disease. Those with big tummies are suggested to have a lipid test so you can check your cholesterol level. We gain weight because we take more calories than we burn. Much worse, if these calories came from fats. Likewise, a high intake of simple carbo (white rice, white bread and any sweets) may also trigger our system to store these excess calories into body fats.

So how can we manage our weight and get rid of big tummies?

Eat frequently but less

1. Don’t eat when you are hungry, but eat five to six times a day, in small portions, regularly and consistently. This will increase your metabolism. Your body will be busy digesting food, thus, will burn more calories.

2. Know your daily calorie requirement. Take in less calories so you can burn the extras in your body and tummy.

3. Slow down on foods high in saturated and trans fats, and simple carbo. Go for more fruits, veggies and complex carbo.

4. Regulate your drinking habit.

Be Physically Active

As they say “galaw galaw lang at baka ma stroke”. Burn more calories by engaging on more physical activities.

1. Develop an exercise regimen, either anabolic (weight exercises) or Aerobic (cardio exercises).

2. Walk whenever possible. Moderately use escalators, elevators. Park your car from a distance if possible.

3. Engage in any sport whenever possible.

4. Dance (form of aerobic exercise) your way to a sexier body.

Sleep Well

Lack of sleep slows down our metabolism. Thus, may cause us to burn less calories and store more. In my experience, I gained most weight when my kids were still babies. The babes disrupted our sleeping habits at least for two years each. And during this period, weight gain and body (tummy) fats were noted.

Taking care of our body is not only practical, but also “godly”…..

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;” 1 Corinthians 6:19

Happy weekend.
